OEUK & Wind Turbine Medicals

Previously known as OGUK (Oil & Gas UK), OEUK is the leading representative for the UK offshore energy industry.  Industry policies require that offshore workers must be regularly assessed by a doctor registered with the OEUK to make sure they are fit for their working environment. We can also provide medical fitness assessments for wind turbine workers as per the Energies Institute guidance.

Why are offshore medicals required?

In the offshore environment, there is limited medical support available. Medical evacuation can be costly to companies, but most importantly, can often be delayed due to weather conditions putting extra risk on workers who are unwell. The offshore medical assesses your fitness to travel to, and work in the offshore environment. It considers your ability to complete a wide variety of tasks such as carrying out your normal duties without compromise to yourself or others and your ability to take part in offshore survival training. It also considers whether you require ongoing treatments that are not available offshore, and whether you are at risk of sudden illness that would not be possible to manage offshore.

How to I book my medical?

Booking is easy online. Just choose your medical, your date and time, and enter your details to book. Send in your pre-appointment questionnaires by email, or bring them along on the day.

Wind Turbine Medical

The Wind Turbine Medical is for those working on any wind turbines, whether offshore, land-based, or visitors. This medical includes a Chester Step Test. Please complete and return by email the Wind Turbine Questionnaire, found here.

Standard OEUK

The OEUK medical is the standard offshore medical for all those that work offshore in the UK. The OEUK pre-appointment questionnaire can be found here.

Fit to Train

For those wanting to complete offshore survival training such as BOSIET or FOET, which include using Compressed Air Breathing systems, you will require a "Fit to Train" (FTT) medical and certificate to do this training. This is included in the standard OEUK appointment.  If you need your FTT you should also complete the FTT pre-appointment questionnaire which can be found here.

If you only require your FTT, and not the OEUK, you can book the shorter FTT appointment on its own.

Emergency Response Team - ERT

If you are part of the offshore Emergency Response Team (ERT), this is a more labour intensive role and the medical is more intensive to reflect this. You will need to book an ERT medical and complete the OEUK pre-appointment questionnaire.

What happens after my medical?

In most cases, a decision regarding your fitness to work will be make by the end of your appointment, and you will be provided with the relevant certificate. Your certificate will last a maximum of 2 years, at which point you will need to arrange a renewal of your medical.

Occassionally, medical conditions that are identified from the medical should be discussed with the operating companies medical advisor. This is to confirm whether the installation has the appropriate facilities to support a particular medical condition, and following discussion may enable a certificate to work with restrictions to particular installations or working conditions. It remains the responsibility of the operating company medical advisor to ensure that persons working offshore meet the necessary health standards for working on the installation and the final decision of fitness to work remains with them.
